Planning and Executing Construction and Contracting Projects: Tips for Consumers

Welcome to my blog. My name is Deborah. About 15 years ago, I bought an old home. We worked with several contractors to rehabilitate it, but ultimately, the foundation simply wasn't stable enough, and we had to tear it down. After that, we worked with a construction crew to build a home from the ground up. The experience was exciting and challenging, and I learned a lot through that process. I want to share construction and contracting facts and information with others so I decided to start this blog. I hope that you like the results, and I thank you for reading. Enjoy!

Wooden Vs. Plastic Crates: How to Choose

by Samantha Russell

When it comes to buying new crates for storage or transportation of items, you have to make various decisions regarding the type you want. One of the important decisions is choosing between plastic and wood crates. While these are not the only materials used, they are most popular. How do you decide between the two? Here are some features of plastic and wooden crates that will help you make the decision.

Wooden crates

Wood is a versatile material that is widely used in the construction of crates. It is efficient, safe, and quite affordable for use in shipping and storage applications. It is easily customizable to your storage needs and can support heavy loads. Good quality wood can withstand different climatic conditions and remain robust for a long time. Wood is also recyclable, meaning, once you are done using the crates, you can disassemble them to make other structures. However, it has the following disadvantages:

  • Untreated wood can quickly become contaminated with fungi and bacteria, especially when exposed to humid conditions.
  • Large wood crates may require lifting equipment such as forklifts and cranes.
  • Customized wood crates may not be suitable for other storage or transport applications.
  • Wood can be more heavy and fragile compared to plastic.

Plastic crates

Plastic is a versatile material that can be molded to make transportation and storage crates. One of its benefits is that it is lightweight and yet can accommodate bulky items. This makes it preferable to wood which can be pretty heavy when loaded. Also, plastic is resistant to chemical corrosion and weather elements, making it suitable to use even in adverse weather conditions. Hard plastic has high fire ratings and can protect items from high temperatures. However, it has the following disadvantages:

  • Plastic crates cannot be disassembled and rebuilt like the wooden ones.
  • It's hard to customize as the process requires industrial molding.
  • Plastic can degrade over time due to denting, cracking, and scratching

Verdict

Both wood and plastic are ideal materials for crates. However, if you wish to use the materials afterward, you can choose wood which can be disassembled easily. Wood is also ideal for heavy and fragile materials due to its sturdiness. On the other hand, if high temperatures are a concern, you can choose hard plastic crates.

The type of material you choose for your new crates is essential for safe transportation and storage of items. By understanding the features of wood and plastic crates, you can choose the ideal one for your applications.
